STREAM WEAVERS NAAFI, ESTRID LUTZ AND DAVID BRONER
Encore and gallery La Trinidad / Solida present CORE 000 STREAM WEAVERS, a Fantasy Adventure generated between Mexico and France by Estrid Lutz, David Broner and Lao (NAAFI).
CORE 000 STREAM WEAVERS is an exhibition by artists Estrid Lutz, David Broner and music artist Lao (NAAFI), produced by ENCORE. It took place in spring 2021 at contemporary art gallery La Trinidad / Solida in Oaxaca, Mexico. A starting point for Stream Weavers is a shared fascination of the artists for what they defined as a woven reality. It all started with a conversation around fantasy adventure game Loom, launched in 1990 by LucasArts. This game takes place in the year 8021 at the Age of the Great Guild and tells the story of Bobbin Threadbare, member of the guild of Weavers which established themselves as masters of woven fabric, though they eventually transcended the limits of cloth and began to weave subtle patterns of influence into the very fabric of reality.

CORE 000 STREAM WEAVERS BLOOM BLEACH INTO THE BLEACH by Estrid Lutz, 180 x 110 x 3 cm, Epoxy resin, honeycomb alluminium, ink, fiber glass fiber, plastic cable
Fascinated by Loom's plot and its otherworldly aesthetic, the two artists started playing around with the idea of an imaginary world in which all things and beings would be entangled together, constituting the millions of threads of a woven reality. In turn, they generated their shared vision about the fabric of reality and established a coherent world constituted of various landscapes and the creatures who created them – just like spiders standing on their webs.

CORE 000 STREAM WEAVERS UNTITLED by Estrid Lutz, 142 x 115 x 3 cm, Epoxy resin, honeycomb alluminium, ink, fiber glass fiber, plastic cable
The very different backgrounds of the two artists has been a catalyst of how the show originated: opposed to Lutz’s very raw material oriented practice is Broner’s virtual design roots. We could call the universe they are creating a techcomposite material world — high tech, low tech, actual and virtual objects are mixed and weaved, together. Influenced by the aesthetics of data centers and spiritual idols from role player game fantasy worlds, Lutz and Broner chose to show us simultaneously both the two sides of the coin of reality. Behind-the-scenes becomes as important as the scene itself, pushing visitors to get lost between the fabric this reality, its threads, its construction and constant entropy.

On one side, aluminium honeycomb, glass wires, epoxy resin, plastic wires and phosphorescent pigments are among the material vocabulary of Lutz’s virtual landscapes artefacts. Her floating matter reminds us those of asteroids and galaxies — either objects lost in the deep space or portals to new worlds.
